KFMH Open Classes - COMPLETED

Project Overview

Thanks to the invaluable support of Guildford Borough Council through the Aspire Grant, Karate for Mental Health CIC successfully launched a 12-week pilot programme providing free martial arts sessions for vulnerable adults in the community. This project offered physical activity, mental health support, and a welcoming space for individuals facing financial, emotional, and physical challenges.

Objectives

  • Promote physical and mental wellbeing through inclusive martial arts.
  • Provide accessible and structured fitness sessions for disadvantaged adults.
  • Build social connection and confidence in a supportive environment.
  • Empower individuals to regain control of their health and mindset.

Participants

We proudly engaged 12 adults from diverse, disadvantaged backgrounds, including:

  • Parents of children with disabilities.
  • Adults with physical disabilities and chronic conditions, such as diabetes.
  • Hard-of-hearing individuals.
  • People experiencing low self-esteem, anxiety, and isolation.

These individuals came together weekly to grow, move, and support each other through shared experience.

Impact

The feedback we have received confirms a powerful and lasting effect:

  • "Your classes helped pull me out of a very deep pit."
  • "Attending your sessions has permitted me to pierce that bubble and grow."
  • "Doing something physical charges one’s batteries. I leave uplifted and wanting more."

Key Outcomes:

  • Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  • Improved social engagement and inclusion.
  • Increased energy, confidence, and physical health.
  • Strong sense of belonging, growth, and mutual support

Acknowledgements

This success would not have been possible without the generous support and belief from:

  • Guildford Borough Council & an Aspire Community Grant – for funding the launch of this initiative.
  • Les Bubka – All Round Karate – for delivering safe, empowering, and compassionate instruction.
  • Black Badger BJJ Gym – for providing facilities and an ongoing partnership.

We are especially grateful for the trust placed in us to pilot this project, which has now led to an exciting next step.
